Nutrition for Orphans and Vulnerable Children

Feb 19, 2018
Africa

Adequate nutrition is vital for the health and survival of all individuals. HIV infection can lead to malnutrition, and a poor diet can speed the infection's progress. As HIV treatment becomes increasingly available critical questions are emerging about how well the drugs work in people who are short of food. We provide a healthy meal and a nutritional shake to orphans and vulnerable children who are part of our after-school programme and are either infected with HIV or are malnourished.

Malnourished children are not only more susceptible to sickness and missing school, they also find it harder to concentrate and succeed in their studies. Children who attend the Meetse a Bhopelo after school programme benefit from individual tutoring, sporting activities and often what is their only proper meal of the day. However, one good meal a day is not enough, so we supplement this with Nucleo, a nutrient-packed super-shake, specifically designed to boost general health and immunity.

Research suggests that the following nutrients are especially important in supporting immune function and delaying the progress of HIV to AIDS: Selenium, vitamin B complex, (including folic acid), vitamin A, zinc, vitamin E. A 'Nucleo' shake will boost the immune system of those who are most in need. 'Nucleo' combines nutritional supplements in a 43-ingredient super-shake. The ingredients were selected due to their individual scientific track record in promoting immunity and wellness.

Good health and the ability to pass exams and succeed in school is these children's pathway to getting out of poverty.
